Looking back at 2013

I have to say this year has been very good for me.  Some of it did have some suckage going on but over all I achieved stuff I never dreamt about doing at 360 pounds...

Like being on the cover of a magazine!  Yes they photoshopped me all to hell but the overall experience was amazing.

Or maybe going on national tv?  I'm a member of the Joy Fit Club (The Today Show).  Again, very cool experience.  I have never been to New York and to go twice in a few months felt like a dream.


Outside of all of the media attention though, I was busy buying a house , living in the middle of family drama I got drug into & trying to figure out why my Asperger's child was having extreme meltdowns at school.  It felt like I was drowning between these.  So I fell back into stress eating, not doing anything for myself & just going through my day like a robot.  I gained about 30 pounds back in the first half of the year but I still pushed on with my exercise (see why I tell you that you can't out train a bad diet?).

In fitness my year went pretty damn awesome :)

I started out doing a 5K on New Years Day.

I did a few more races & bumped up to doing 10Ks.  My first one was the Crescent City Classic in Nola.


I decided I wanted more & registered for a triathlon.  My first one in April got rained out but I finally did it in July.


After that I had wild hair up my butt & committed to doing a half marathon in December.... Which I threw my heart & soul into training for.

I completed it....even in horrible weather!



My biggest lesson I learned this year?  I have a lot of self esteem & confidence.  Instead of cutting myself down & basically being my own worst enemy, I was a true friend to myself.....I stayed encouraging but truthful.  This was even when I was regaining.  This is proof enough to me that I have made a total life change.

Hell I even wore a bikini to a public beach & screw anyone that didn't like it ;)


Sure there were things I could have done differently but I take those things in stride.  Every stumbling block makes me a better person because of the experience.  It also gives me ideas on what I need to do differently in the future.

My goals for 2014 are to do more half marathons, keep winning the emotional eating war, either get back to my original goal of 160 or at least fit into the clothes I wore at that weight....I'm about 20 pounds away.

Oh and to keep putting myself out there for people to see that no you don't have to be perfect & you can be successful at a huge weightloss without the pills or gimmicks people try to sell you.  You can do it no matter the ups & downs in life!

You just gotta love yourself and value the relationship you have with yourself to make the commitment <3

Success Story: Katie

Meet Katie!  She has done an amazing job!


Your name & age?  My name is Kate and I am 31 years old

What made you decide to change?  I got so embarrassed to even go see and visit my family.. I was afraid to sit down in chairs because sometimes I couldn't fit into a chair.. and I had a really hard time with self care things like- clipping my toe nails, etc... Of course, other health issues like PCOS, high cholesterol, etc..  

How did you do it? How did I lose 152 lbs- so far?  One healthy choice at a time.. One day at a time.. Diet and exercise.. and honesty to myself about the food I put into my body.. Last, doing this for me and no one else... no comparing to other people.. no doing this to impress other people.. 

What was your biggest challenge?  In the beginning of my journey, I realized that I had an addiction to sugar to get over.. I felt like a crack addict with no crack for a while.. but.. after I got over that hump, I felt WAAAAAAAAAAAY better..

What is your biggest piece of advice to someone who is just starting? One healthy choice at a time... This is a journey without a destination or end...

A Typical Day in Food for Me

I eat a lot.  In fact if you know me in real life, you see me eating all of the time lol

Today I'm going to try updating this as I go along so bookmark this and keep checking in through out the day!

This is where all of the magic happens.  My food journal.  Yes I still write it by hand.  To me it's easier. (I write notes to myself at the top everyday)

Oh and it really doesn't matter if you do it by app or paper....it only matters if you do it lol



To give you an example here it is in pictures: 

My breakfast....3 whole eggs, 1/2c steamed spinach & 1/2oz smoked salmon


First snack....a sliced up bell pepper & string cheese.  Oh and a banana but I ate it before I thought about doing this blog haha


Lunch!!!  See?  I eat bread :) Not Simply Filling (so have to count points) but still yummy!  This is a wrap with a sun-dried tomato flat out bread, 1 wedge of laughing cow garden veggie cheese, 2oz oven baked Jenny-O turkey, 1/4 a cucumber that is julienned long ways, and a handful of baby spinach.

Which I scarfed down.  My oldest called me from school and I went to go get him because I really don't feel like dealing with his school today (all of my Asperger mom's know what I mean lol)....next is my daughter's violin lesson at school.  I have to go every week.


Got everything written down so far :)


Have to track this....a piece of Godiva Peppermint Bark.  Oh. My. Yum!


My real snack, the other 1/4 of my cucumber.



Dinner is slow cooked trimmed beef round roast, 1/2 cup rice (I totally forgot to pick up brown rice.  My husband only eats white rice so I had some) & asparagus that was sautéed in a little olive oil & garlic.  Yum!


Finally my last snack, air popped popcorn seasoned with a little bit of sea salt to share with my husband & 3 kids while we watch The Santa Clause 2 & The Polar Express :)


Btw, today was strength day for me.  I wound up doing my circuit which is this:

Moral of this post?  Hold yourself accountable by writing everything down.  This was the kick in the butt I needed to make sure I do it more consistently so thank you to those that asked me to do this!

My plan for this week


Like most of you, the holidays are a very busy time for me.  Talk about crazy.....parties at school for all 3 kids which all happen to be on the same day. & almost at the same time (I need a clone lol), shopping to finish up everything completely, wrapping the kid's presents while they are at school, getting my exercise in (I can't wait until my new Zumba World Party Xbox 360 game comes in!), and just every day normal stuff.

How do I find time for breakfast?  I make egg muffins ahead of time.  This week it's eggs, spinach & turkey sausage crumbles.  My recipe can be found here: http://fromfattofitchick.blogspot.com/2013/07/spinach-bacon-egg-muffins.html

Lunch?  I pretend I'm going to school & pack a lunch with snacks to take with me.  I cook some chicken breasts or salmon ahead of time and throw it in a salad.   

Dinner?  My answer is the crock pot.  Easy peasy.

Monday:  Slow cooked roast with brown rice & steamed broccoli

Tuesday:  Chicken Quinoa Soup with Kale

Wednesday:  Slow Cooker Lasagna

Thursday:  Chicken Vegetable Soup

Friday:  Leftovers!

Saturday:  Baked steelhead trout, brown rice, & sautéed asparagus

Changing Your Attitude

"The problem is not the problem.  The problem is your attitude about the problem."

Exactly.


I haven't always been a Pollyanna with my problems.  Shocking, I know.  So I'm going to share some tips I use to keep a positive attitude.  

- Positive attracts positive and negative attracts negative.  Remember that.

- Read The Secret.  I know, I know it's a bit new age but it is really good.

- If I think a negative thought about myself I make myself write down at least 3 unique and positive things about myself.

-  Hang on to those motivational pictures I post on my Facebook page.  I print them out, use them as the lock screen picture on my phone or I write down the quotes on post-it notes and put them where I can see them.

-  Positive affirmations.  Look yourself in the mirror & tell yourself that you love you or something like that you are worth fighting for....it might make you roll your eyes at first but if people are told something over & over they will believe it. I still tell myself something in the mirror everyday.

- Surround yourself with people that raise you up & limit or eliminate the toxic people in your life.  It's hard to do but I've done it....you do feel a lot better & it feels like a weight has lifted off of you.

-  Grow a backbone.  Don't be afraid to tell people no if you are stretching yourself too thin.  I'd rather pour my heart into one thing to help someone & not feel stressed than to sprinkle little bits of myself in various projects & feel like I'm about to lose my mind. 

-  Try to find a solution to a problem instead of letting it be a problem.  If it's a problem that doesn't have a real solution then you have to adjust your sails & change the way you look at it. 

- Be your own best friend.  I've said this so many times but value your relationship with yourself like you would with any other relationship that you cherish.

My First Half Marathon Recap!

It was cold to me here in Southeast Louisiana.

It stormed....which made me feel like I was going to freeze to death.

It was a blast!!!!

If you are in the Baton Rouge area check out the Woman's Half Marathon, 10K & the 225K (that's the 5K...just a play with the area code lol).  It was a well run race and would recommend it to anyone.  Just be prepared for a hilly course.  This girl runs on flat land....let's face it, in my part of Louisiana the highest point is Monkey Hill at the Audubon Zoo haha!


I made a personal best at the 3.1 (5K) mark at 37 minutes, the 10K mark was 1:01 minutes....the half marathon was at almost 3 hours. 

Why?

I have a really bad bunion on my left foot.  I never have problems with it when I run but I think with my feet being soaked it irritated it....a lot.  

At mile 10-ish it hurt so bad I cried.  It made my whole leg hurt.  I pushed through though.  I thought of all of my supporters on my facebook page & here that were rooting for me.

I would still do it again in a heartbeat :)

The moment I crossed the finished line was such a moment of victory that it's so hard to describe.

I went from barely being able to be active for 5 minutes to doing a 13.1 mile race.  Y'all.  I don't know what else to say.  I feel speechless.

Oh wait....all I had to do it walk away from my blog ;)

I did it!!  OMG y'all I'm still on a runner's high lol

Now I've been getting questions on how I trained for it.  I've been running for a while....mainly 5Ks & 10Ks.  I had a half marathon on this list in my mind of things I wanted to do in the long shot of me liking to run. 

When it came to training for the half marathon, on the advice of a friend, I used Hal Higdon's novice training program (http://www.halhigdon.com).  It's free and it was realistic.

The day before I did the Celebration in the Oaks 2 mile Fun Run with my family.  It's our 3rd year doing it & has quickly become one of my favorite Christmas traditions.

Lighten Up :)

Being able to see the humor in a lot of things is a saving grace for me.  There was a time I didn't see the humor and it was one of the darkest moments in my life....

I know trying to figure out what to eat, how to exercise, and everything involving losing weight can be pretty stressful and frustrating.  When it gets that way.....find something to laugh at.  Seriously.

Go watch a funny movie, listen to your kid's corny joke, look at those cute kitten/puppy videos your friends pass around on Facebook.

This is why I post those stupid/silly ecards I find online.  They make me laugh.  If they make me laugh I know it'll make others laugh too....not everyone because I totally see the comments that take my jokes seriously lol


It really is the best medicine.  When you do it often, things won't be as stressful and you'll looking for the bright side when stuff doesn't exactly go your way.
