Tips: How Do I Start?

It's always been hard to describe how I started.  Honestly it was a big blur because I was so fixated on getting it done.

So I've been sitting & thinking about it and have came up with these tips....the things I remember doing at the start of my journey.

1. Look at all of your eating plan options.  Don't take everything you read to heart.  Just look for the eating plan that draws you in, whether it be clean eating, counting calories, Weight Watchers, South Beach, Volumetrics, Paleo, etc.

2.  Don't go balls to the wall with exercising right off the bat.  Going from 0 to 2+ hours of working out probably won't be liveable for the long run.  Take it a little at a time.  I started at 5 minutes a day....now I'm a Personal Trainer, can teach fitness classes & I do Half Marathons.

3.  When I started I cleaned out my entire kitchen & started over from scratch with food.  This can be either a perfect fit for you or totally overwhelming....don't think you have to do that.  Small changes definitely work too.

4.  Have a heart to heart talk with your family.  If you really want to change they need to either support you, respect your decision or just shut the hell up & let you do your thing.  My husband supports me 100% and we decided it would be a family effort.

5.  If things seem overwhelming try to keep things simple as you can.  All the information out there can make you so confused....this would be the time to put on blinders then pick & choose what you think would suit you the best.

6.  You can always tweak things with your eating & exercise.  Remember that.

7.  Walking *is* a good workout no matter what others say.

8.  Track what you are putting in your mouth.  No matter what eating plan you do, it helps make you more aware.

9.  Try using a smaller plate.  You'll be surprised on the mind game here.

10.  Write out your goals.  For me, losing 200 pounds was overwhelming & just seemed out of reach so I broke that goal down into 5 pound increments.  I celebrated each and every 5 pound goal with a victory dance.....think touchdown dance lol

11.  Believe you can do it.  Once you feel like this is true, no matter how many bumps you have along the way, I have total faith you will succeed :)

Above all:

You'll never know what you are able to achieve until you start.  <3

This Week's Plan for 1/26-2/1

This is going to be short and sweet.....my 2nd half marathon is a week from today so I'll be taking it somewhat easy until then, other than a 5 mile run on Monday.

My breakfast, lunch & snacks will be pretty much the same as last week's.

So here is my dinner plan...which is pretty much thanks to Skinnytaste lol:

Sunday - Easy Macaroni Casserole

Support Groups & Why You Need Them

Another crucial tool that helped me lose 200 pounds was support groups.

As much as my husband & most of my family are supportive, they had no earthly idea of what I was going through.  I felt almost alienated.  My frustrations or stuff I wanted to shout from my rooftop was met with "You are doing awesome.  You'll get there!"  Which is great in a general way....they didn't really know how to support other than to be my cheerleaders because they had never had to or wanted to get rid of a large amount of weight.  So I sought support in other places too.

I was part of both in person & online groups.

First there was my weekly meetings with Weight Watchers.  If you aren't a Weight Watchers member and need in person support I do recommend TOPS or Taking Off the Pounds Sensibly.  Both give you that face to face accountability & support.  I love face to face contact...a lot of people don't though but don't keep that from holding you back from finding support.

Next is online support groups.  The main one I joined is called 3FatChicks.com & while I'm still sometimes on it, I have shifted getting my online support from my fan page, this blog & my private group on Facebook (it's called We Are Fit For Life 2 if you want to join us).

Why go online?  It's support almost 24/7 so if you are having a weak moment, excited over something or have questions you can post away.  Message boards and Facebook groups are a great way to get support if you are wanting to keep it semi private.  You have your cheerleaders, people that will help you come up with solutions to your problems & people that are there to listen because they know where you are coming from.

If you go the FB page route just know while most of it is positive, when strangers find the page you are going to have to develop a somewhat thick skin and use the ban/delete button sometimes.  People can be hateful online, more so than real life.  If you can ignore them or learn to roll your eyes when you read the negative, a page is awesome tool :)  You get to inspire people on a larger scale and in turn, at least for me, it helps me keep going and stay motivated.

Empowering and supporting people, especially women, is a passion for me...this is why I chose to show all my business on my FB page & everywhere else.  To let people know that they aren't alone and it's possible to change everything to become the person you were meant to be.

Whether you want to inspire or be inspired, a support group is the place to be!

My plan for the week of 1/19 - 1/25

The past week went pretty well as far as staying on plan with food goes.  I splurged on a piece of an awesome tasting King Cake on Wednesday (here around New Orleans we are gearing up for Mardi Gras) and yesterday I had a smokehouse hamburger from a restaurant.  I still lost 2 pounds so it's all good ;)

For this upcoming week for exercise I have to pick up my running a bit.  My husband and I'll be doing the Rock n Roll Half Marathon in New Orleans at the beginning of February.  Honestly I have been in a running rut after my first half marathon in December.  At the most I've been doing is 3 miles lately.  It's time to go a bit longer a couple of times a week.  Of course I'll be cross training by lifting weights too.

Ok so now my dinner menu:

Sunday - Slow cooked pot roast with veggies and mashed cauliflower....no recipe for the pot roast really but my mashed cauliflower is here...http://fromfattofitchick.blogspot.com/2013/01/my-mashed-cauliflower.html

Monday - Chicken Noodle Soup
https://www.facebook.com/notes/from-fat-to-fit-chick/chicken-noodle-soup-weight-watchers/166429593367684

Tuesday - Provencal Beef Daube (slow cooker)
http://www.myrecipes.com/recipe/provencal-beef-daube-50400000110437/

Wednesday - Shrimp Stir Fry...no real recipe, I cook a pound of small shrimp, add half of a bag of stir fry veggies that I bought from Sam's with the sauce, add in a package of stir fry mushrooms you can buy at Walmart and ta-da!

Thursday - Crock Pot Chicken Cacciatore
http://www.skinnytaste.com/2012/06/crock-pot-chicken-cacciatore.html

Friday - Crock Pot Chicken & Sausage Gumbo
http://simple-nourished-living.com/2013/12/slow-cooker-chicken-and-sausage-gumbo/

Saturday - Grilling stuff....dunno what, my husband usually picks :)  We will be having grilled veggies too

For breakfast I made some light english muffin, egg, cheese and Canadian bacon sandwiches for both my husband and I.  For my kids, I made them biscuits with turkey breakfast sausage and cheese.

Lunch for me is either left overs or a protein and salad.

Snacks consist of my obsession of  ambrosia apples, sliced veggies and grapes portioned in baggies so I can grab & go, light string cheese, air popped popcorn

I hope this gives you food ideas!

Oh and gotta begin the week with a great no nonsense quote.  I know I don't have any real excuses to keep me pushing towards my goals.

Forced Changes: My time to fly!

This morning I got some news that the direct sales company that I have been a part of for about 10 years was bought by another larger company....for those that don't know I did "those" parties with Slumber Parties & they were bought by Pure Romance.

10 years....y'all I cried when I took my car decal off of my Jeep.

I have so much invested in my business and after I weighed my options I decided to call it quits.  It was a very hard decision to come to.  I just didn't want to put extra time into it to rebuild it especially if my heart really isn't into it.

Gosh it feels like I just jumped off a cliff without a parachute.

After talking with my husband I feel a lot better.  He gave me the go ahead to do whatever I want to do.  He is my rock and #1 supporter....I could probably tell him I wanted to pick up dog poop for a living and he'd support me lol

I have been wanting to write a book about my weight loss journey, so along with my personal training, picking up sponsored blog posts, my partnership with Diva Headbands & the percentage I make off of my Dietbet's I sponsor, that is now my business.  I am scared to death because this is now my job.....my real job.  Wow.

Who knew that this would morph into this?

I do know.....

I have a feeling it's going to be one hell of a ride.

PS. My next Dietbet is starting January 31st!

Success Story: Jesica

Meet Jesica!  She has done an amazing job!

Your name & age? Jesica and I am 32 years old

What made you decide to change? I started Weight Watchers last Sept because I was getting married in Oct of this year. I wanted to feel better about myself, feel and look beautiful in my pictures. But I also wanted to look healthy and happy. I am not happy overweight and was very depressed on how I looked and felt. I was in constant pain from doing nothing now I am in pain from working out everyday which is a much better kind of pain. But I also needed to lose the weight for health reasons. My fathers side has a history of diabetes. My dad lost his foot last year and part of the other because of diabetes. And after going with him to the doctors every week, visiting him in the hospital for months and months, I vowed to myself that I would never let that happen, and losing weight is the one thing that I can do for myself to not let it happen.

How did you do it? Weight Watchers and working out by going to the gym and I started running this past April.

What was your biggest challenge? Eating. I LOVE to eat! Weight Watchers helps keep me in check but there are times when I splurge.

What is your biggest piece of advice to someone who is just starting? Be patient. You didn't gain the weight overnight and you certainly won't lose it overnight either.

Do you have a fan page or blog? No

It's on! 100 days of "If you bite it, write it"

Writing down what you eat no matter what way of eating you are doing can be extremely helpful in losing weight & getting healthy. I know I do a million times better when I do.....heck it's one of the essential things I did to lose 200 pounds.

Eventually though, you miss a day here and there.  Which is perfectly fine.  If you don't stay on top of it then that missed day becomes many days.  Like me earlier last year.  I had loads of excuses why I didn't lol Stress, moving, my son's autistic meltdowns, etc.  *cough*excuses*cough

I have been tracking pretty good since the day after Christmas but stopped when my mom went into the ICU Friday.  I'm determined to stay on track though. So after seeing all this 100 day stuff, I figured "eh, why not?"

So here I am....committing to 100 days of tracking every bite I put in my mouth ;)

If you want to join me I have an event on my facebook page that starts today and ends June 23rd.  It doesn't matter how you track either....by app, website or hand. Just do it lol I personally hand write things down though.

Staying positive when you're stressed

Even if things tend to be high on the suck-age meter and have my stress levels high, I made a promise to myself Friday that I will remain positive no matter what.

There are a lot of thoughts and emotions running through my head while looking at my mom in the hospital bed.  From freaking out thinking "what if" the worst happens to smiling and hearing her voice in my head bitch me out because I was staring at her while she lays there.

So anyway, I made a promise to stay positive.....being negative only serves one purpose and that is to attract more negative to you

How can I?

By taking off my shoes, wiggling my toes in the grass & taking the time to smell the roses....literally (the weather is nice in New Orleans) and figuratively.  I am ever so thankful for all of the things that are going right.  The world is still turning, children are still laughing & I think my brother and sisters have a stronger bond than ever before.

My mom is slowly improving....we found out she has COPD/emphysema.

I'm sitting here in the hospital room with my brother & sisters in silence.  Giving her all of our strength & hope.

Waiting for this ornery woman to bitch at us for touching her feet :)

Not caving in

My mom was rushed to the hospital today.  She had a severe asthma attack & had to be put on a ventilator.  It stresses me out so much to see she isn't taking care of herself.  I'm worried about her.  She'll probably be in there for a while....at least she is stable right now.

If y'all could keep my mom in your thoughts, prayers or whatever else your religion has you do, I would appreciate it very much <3

The only silver lining is that I didn't emotionally eat today.  I wanted to but I didn't.  I went to pick up my best friend & she kept me busy until the kids came home.

One battle down right? :)

Breaking a promise....for a good reason

So I've always promised to not sell anything on my fan page & I know I'm breaking this promise with my signature headband I'm promoting.

Which you can purchase here:  http://www.divaheadbands.com/chicks-signature-band-p-329.html and if you use the code: F2F10 you get 10% off

Isn't it cute?!?!

There is a good reason for me breaking my promise though.

Not only is it an awesome handmade product but partnering up with Diva Headbands is allowing me to be able to save up for something I've been wanting.

Ok before I get to that, my page gets hundreds of messages a day.  A quarter of those messages are asking me to help promote their "go fund me" for weight loss surgery, weight loss camp, loose skin removal, etc.

Anyway, I've thought about doing that to help with the removal of my loose skin on my legs but nixed the idea.  It just feels wrong to ask people for money.  I tried selling Origami Owl to help fund it and I do have the money I've earned from that sitting in my savings account but me and OO have parted ways (for reasons I'm not going into).

I was approached by Diva Headbands to do a giveaway on my page a few months ago.  I've tried lots of headbands, which most I love but these kinda blew them all out of the water.  They stayed totally in place without me having to readjust them at all or pin in place.

I developed a really good relationship with Beverly & Macy, the minds behind Diva Headbands.  They asked me to become an Ambassador & then approached me with this signature band idea.

So here we are :)

Instead of just asking for money, I'd rather y'all have something in return.  I get a percentage off of this band & I will be putting it aside to have the loose skin on my legs removed.

Which I don't really mind the skin when I'm not running.  When I run I have to wear Spanx to keep it from jerking around (if it jerks around too much I get bruises & other TMI stuff).  I want to keep running <3

Thank you everyone for the support!!  So there you have why I broke my promise.  :)

Btw, by the time I pay for my deductable for my insurance I might as well pay out of pocket *if* my insurance would even cover it (that's a big if too lol)

My plan for Jan 5 - 11th

I have been planning for a while now....it makes things go smoother for me.  To read about what exactly I do in more detail I have it pretty much outlined in this blog:  http://fromfattofitchick.blogspot.ca/2013/10/planning-for-week.html

This week for exercise I have on tap:  running 3 miles for my cardio days (M/W/F) and I'm going to be doing Body Pump on my strength training days (T, TH).  If by chance I don't get to run because of the weather I'll probably do a DVD like Jillian Michael's Ripped in 30.  Maybe, just maybe I'll get my sister or BFF on board....if not then no biggie.

For meals this week, which I know people are waiting on this:

Breakfast:  I made sausage, egg & cheese english muffins for this week.  These are made with light english muffins, 2% cheese, turkey breakfast sausage and one whole egg.  Yes I still eat whole eggs.  Yes I can still lose weight when I eat them ;)

Lunch:  A protein and steamed veggies.  I have chicken breast shredded in the fridge to grab, plus I have some salmon & tilapia filets ready to thaw and bake.  I buy bags of frozen veggies at Sam's plus I always have plenty of fresh veggies around too.

Dinner:

Sunday - Red Beans, brown rice and turkey sausage

Monday - Chicken Taco Chili
(http://www.skinnytaste.com/2008/11/crock-pot-chicken-taco-chili-4-pts.html)

Tuesday - Slow Cooker Cheeseburger Soup
(http://www.weightwatchers.com/food/rcp/RecipePage.aspx?recipeid=140381)

Wednesday - Slow Cooked Whole Chicken, homemade mashed potatoes (promised the kids and hubby for the real stuff....I add in plain non-fat greek yogurt instead of butter and a bit of garlic), and sauteed asparagus.

Thursday - Chicken Pot Pie Soup
(http://www.skinnytaste.com/2011/01/chicken-pot-pie-soup.html)

Friday - It's Cabbage Ball night!  We are in the playoffs....CB is kind of like softball but it's a bigger ball and we don't use gloves.  We are having Beef Stew (http://www.laaloosh.com/2008/06/15/homemade-beef-stew-crock-pot-recipe/)

Saturday - My husband told me he wants to grill.  We live right outside of New Orleans so no snow here but it rains here a lot so if it does we'll probably do breakfast for dinner. ;)

Snacks:  I have stuffed like fresh veggies, fruit, air popped popcorn, and light string cheese to enjoy.

This picture is what I use to write out my meals on.  This way my gang knows what is coming.  I do switch days around sometimes but it's no biggie.  I also use the app called AnyList on my iPhone to make my grocery list since it categorizes all the food where I would find it...it's pretty cool and FREE  lol  I love free!
